Boryana was just over 18 years old when she gave birth to her son Radoslav. The young mother lives in Sofia (Fakulteta neighborhood) and, despite all difficulties and deprivations, she keeps smiling and being grateful. One of the things that makes her smile more confidently is the support she receives weekly from a home-visiting nurse - Plamena. She is part of a team of medical professionals providing the home-visiting service "Nurse-Family Partnership" (NFP) since 2016.
In this video, we show part of Boryana's story, part of Plamena’s mission to help, and part of the achievement of a larger goal - that every young mother and her child, especially those living in poverty, receive support by professionals in their homes. In the period from early pregnancy until the child's second birthday, parents from our NFP program receive over 60 home visits to build parenting capacity, gain confidence and take steps towards economic stability.
Additionally, we have a special initiative for those families’ - the "Gift a Fairytale" campaign, which annually collects donations of books to be distributed as Christmas gifts. More often than not, for families living in poverty, access to children's books is severely limited. At the same time, reading or storytelling is extremely important for the development of language skills and imagination from an early age. Through these book donations in the year-end campaign, we bring bits of joy to every child in our service, as well as encourage parents to include reading or storytelling in their daily activities with the children.
