This project continues the work started last academic year with a project supported by TSA in the v. of Zhelio Voivoda-Sliven. The current project will support all 156 Roma students in 5-8th grade in two schools in the region of Sliven – the v. of Zhelyo Voivoda and the v. of Seliminovo. The project addresses two challenges: firstly, a large number of Roma students enter 5th grade still illiterate and with major gaps in knowledge, and secondly students lack quality preparation in key academic subjects. To address these challenges, the organization will provide tutorials in Bulgarian language and literature and mathematics for students in 5th-8th grade to help students prepare for the state exams (“maturi”) and successful enrollment in high school; tutorials in Bulgarian for students in 5-8th grade who are illiterate and have major deficiencies in learning; and other support, including provision of lunch when extra classes take place, an essay competition, and festivities. A key element of the project is the community mediator work with parents.
